Knysna turaco (Tauraco corythaix)

In South Africa the common name for this bird is Knysna Lourie.

19 inches long.

A large turaco, it is a resident breeder in the mature evergreen forests of southern and eastern South Africa, and Swaziland. It was formerly sometimes considered to be a subspecies of the green turaco of West Africa.

Shows red wings in flight.

It feeds mainly on fruits and berries, with seeds, leaves, insects, and earthworms making up the rest of its diet.

Lays two eggs in a shallow platform nest made from sticks and placed in a tree or clump of creepers. Though social, nesting is solitary, with the nest built by both adults.

The total population is estimated to be less than 10 000 mature individuals.

Photographed in Wilderness, Western Cape, South Africa.
